If you really want to head back in time and have the full on medieval nobility thing going on then by all means buy yourself a large sturdy wooden four poster and hang some impressive canopy curtains around it. Again make sure you can attach them to the bed posts during the day so that changing the bed sheets doesn't become a nightmare.
Velvet curtains are great and gives a really luxurious feel but they will keep in the heat when you're sleeping so are not recommended for hot countries. For warm weather consider perhaps silk or satin. If you're making curtains yourself be sure to give your self a few extra inches of material to play with so that your curtains definitely hit the ground when the hang straight down.
